A better future starts by changing what we think is possible.
INDEPENDENCE • FOUNDATIONS

“Independence isn’t about doing everything yourself. It’s about creating more choices for yourself.”
— Charlie Merritt
Most people hear the word quadriplegic and immediately think about everything that’s impossible. I understand why. Before my injury, I probably would have done the same thing. If someone had asked me what life would look like after breaking my neck at the C3 level, I would have pictured everything I thought I stood to lose. What I couldn’t have imagined was how completely my definition of independence would change over the next decade.
For a long time, I measured every challenge against the life I had before my injury. That comparison was exhausting because I was trying to recreate a version of life that no longer existed. The turning point came when I stopped asking, “Why can’t I?” and started asking, “What’s another way?” That question didn’t erase the obstacles in front of me, but it changed the way I approached them.
Looking back, I think that’s what QuadCapable is really about. It isn’t about pretending paralysis is easy. It’s about sharing practical ideas, honest experiences, and better systems that help people build more capable lives.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that independence isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s something you build. Sometimes you build it with technology. Sometimes through preparation. Sometimes through the right caregiver. My caregivers don’t take away my independence; they’re part of the system that helps me preserve it. The same is true of assistive technology. None of these things replace independence; they expand it.
Some articles will be about assistive technology. Others will be about travel, veterans, nutrition, AI, caregiving, or lessons learned the hard way. The subjects will change, but the purpose won’t. Every article should leave you a little more capable than when you started reading.
Charlie-ism
Every article will include a Charlie-ism. They aren’t catchy slogans—they’re principles that have survived real life and continue to shape the way I think, solve problems, and make decisions.
So Easy a Quadriplegic Can Do It™
This started as a joke but became one of my design standards. Whether I’m testing a product, building an AI workflow, or creating a new routine with a caregiver, I want to remove unnecessary complexity. If we can make something simple enough for a C3 quadriplegic to use with the right support, we’ve probably made it better for everyone.
Charlie’s Challenge
Before you leave this article, think about one thing you’ve quietly accepted as impossible or ‘just the way it is.’ Then ask yourself one simple question: What’s another way? Don’t solve the whole problem today. Just identify one action you can take this week that moves you forward.
